Coursework on sociology Essay Example for Free
Coursework on sociology Essay To be a non-traditional student is not at all an easy decision I made. Having my own family who needs my full time and attention is the biggest consideration I had when I decided to take on-line course. However, my family is also the best encouragement and inspiration I had. The world is taking its fast pace towards globalization and everyone must be able to cope up. The computerization of almost everything requires that everyone must conform to the speed of economic changes. In this world where education is a key to success and progress, everyone must avail of education by any means available. I believe that the best thing I can do is to avail of education while still having time with my family is to take online courses. The decision will affect my social life and the financial status of my family since I will have to allocate time and finances with my studies. The hours I am spending before in personally doing the household chores will now be partly consumed by my studies. The few I hours I am spending before in visiting my friends next door will now be lessened in have time for my studies. (Kindly use the remaining required words in answering the question whether you are studying a technical field) In the absence of on line courses, I may consider having evening or weekend classes. However, evenings are my only time to help my kids in their home works. I do not want to sacrifice weekends either because I strictly set these days as family and church days. So the best thing for me is to choose timeslots that will best fit school hours when my children are in school which online courses offered. Question 2 English is undoubtedly the worldââ¬â¢s widely accepted language as it is the required language for everyone to communicate globally. It is therefore important that everyone be able to have the opportunity to learn Standard English in order to cope up with the fast changing world especially that the world is pushing through globalization. I believe that even the students in the rural areas can compete globally. However, it is impossible for them to do it if they cannot meet the standards of the global arena expressed in Standard English. I believe that with this need, a child needs to learn English even before he go to a formal school. This does not however mean that local dialects are to be set aside and be forgotten. While English has been set as the official language of Kentucky in 1984, I believe that their local dialects as well as that of African-American who speak Ebonics must still be practiced. ââ¬Å"Teachers should be given every possible tool to reach our childrenâ⬠(L. L. Rush). Even in school premises, it is important that students be able to freely express themselves which can only be possible when they speak in their dialects. But in order for them to cope up with the global standard, they are to strive hard in learning Standard English. Even the government of Kentucky is doing steps in order to assure that the students get the minimum skills required in English and Mathematics (V. Honawar). China, being the host in the 2008 Olympics is requiring its people to learn English in preparation of the event. The best way to learn is to practice and that is what every child in Kentucky and the rest of the world must do. This way, their confidence in facing the world will be better build up which will be their instrument in achieving success whether educational or economic success. Question 3 Robert Williamââ¬â¢s list of values have been created in 1970, that was more than three decades ago. The world has changed a lot, and so are the Americanââ¬â¢s perspectives, priorities and moral standards. As a contemporary American, morality and family are the values that are of the highest importance to me. With the fast changing world, I value education in order for me to cope up with the success and progress of the world. In order for me to do this, I need to avail of the freedom and equality that the American government offers. All of my current efforts are for my family and I owe all of what I have now from God. With reference to Williamââ¬â¢s list, I think that the importance of protecting the family is the value that he had missed. As I browsed on the websites providing lists and information on the American values, I was impressed with the survey results made by the Roper Poll Corporation revealing that protecting the family is the first in the list of values that Americans consider as important. The other values in Williamââ¬â¢s list still appear to be the same important values for Americans although there is a noticeable change in their sequence. I believe that because America has already been progressive, the value of success, achievement and progress are no longer on top of the list. Most of the websites I browsed agreed on the order of the values but are contrary to Williamââ¬â¢s list in the sense that family is not included in the latterââ¬â¢s list. Also, achievement and success are no longer on top of the values prioritized by modern Americans. I believe that my list of values will differ with that of the other students in a way that family and morality, including faith are on top of my list. I am assuming that majority of the students will conform with the latest survey of which family is on top but religiosity and morality at the 8th and 9th spots out of ten values. Ending For Samphire By Patrick OBrien Essays -- Papers
Ending For Samphire By Patrick O'Brien 'As she pushed him, she felt her arms weak like jelly.' Molly knew the force of pushing this boy was too much for her tired arms, but he still fell downward, quite surprised by Molly's actions. On most occasions the boy would have felt embarrassed by being pushed over by a girl, but instead the boy stood up, stared at her and took his trustworthy chameleon and left. Molly really wanted to catch this figure up, but something, maybe her own pride, had pulled her back. Instead she went and sat down beside the palm tree, recollecting her thoughts on how to survive in this unknown island. She knew that she was the only one that survived in the plane crash, so where did the boy come from? And why was he accompanied by a chameleon? And why did she push him, when all he did was stare at her? These questions whirled around Molly's head until she went to a deep sleep. As the native boy left he felt only respect for Molly's action. It showed that she had a key strength of survival - courage. He knew that she is one to be respected if they ever meet again. For now though, his pet, which he names Lacey, was in desperate need for food, and he walked onwards to the lake of swamps. The lake of swamps was a lake that looked very abstract and gave a rancid stink, but still retained some of its beauty. The mystical them of the lake attracted the boy, as from generation from generation he has been taught from his tribe that there is a mystical creature that lives in the lake. The boy grabbed a small boulder and chucked it in the centre of the lake, which stunned most of the fish upwards onto the bank. The... ...outh, because the creature could sense if the human breathed underwater. But the boy could not take the girl upwards, because she was wriggling frantically, trying to kick her way out of the boy's grasp. The boy held on for dear life on her mouth, but she kept fighting frantically until suddenly she stopped. She rose above to the water as a motionless figure. The boy knew she was dead. At utter surprise of Molly's death and that the boy knew he had killed her, he shrieked in horror, tears rolling down his eyes against the floating water. What he forgot was the mystical swamp creature. He had motioned his mouth so the creature had grasped hold of him. The boy fought for escape, but he, like Molly, came to no avail. The creature, after one swirling motion of a hand, had knocked the boy out. The boy's vision went black.

Internal Control and Risk Evaluation
A risk is the chance of a negative event occurring. Internal controls are policies and procedures set in place to reduce the occurrence of an associated risk. Risks are never entirely eliminated; however, internal controls help reduce the occurrence and balance the risk. This brief will discuss the risks of Kudler Fine Foodââ¬â¢s current Accounting Information System (AIS). In addition, the internal controls designed to mitigate the risks. Furthermore, this brief evaluates the internal controls for the AIS. Last, this brief addresses other controls, outside of the AIS that Kudlerââ¬â¢s may need. Identify Risks According to Hunton, Bryant, and Bagranoff (2004), ââ¬Å"business enterprises face a variety of risks, including business, audit, security, and continuity risks. â⬠Business risk means the company may not achieve its goals and objectives. A review of Kudlerââ¬â¢s strategic plan will help determine the business risk. The adoption of the new Just-In-Time (JIT) inventory system would be an IT timing risk. An IT timing risk is an example of an internal business risk that Kudler would face. An audit risk is the likelihood that Kudlerââ¬â¢s external auditor would make a mistake in his or her opinion of the financial statements. Audit risks are broken down further into inherent, control, and detection risks. Every business has inherent risk because doing business is risky in itself. Control risks are the likelihood the internal controls the company has in place would not prevent a material error. Detection risks are the likelihood the audit procedure would not detect material errors. Security risks involve data access and integrity. The AIS converts raw data into useful information. To ensure the data integrity, Kudler will need to control the risks associated with collecting and processing the data. By implementing the JIT inventory system and point of sale system, data is processed as soon as something purchased from the stores. This mitigates human error under the old system. Continuity risks are associated with the AISââ¬â¢ availability, backup, and recovery. Kudlerââ¬â¢s will need to implement stronger firewalls and larger servers. This will ensure when Kudlerââ¬â¢s does business online, customers will be able to access the website at any given time. Any down time of the website would be potential loss of business. Internal Controls Management must design and implement the internal controls. However, this is just two steps of the control process. Management must evaluate the controls for effectiveness. Kudlerââ¬â¢s size would not necessitate an internal auditor; however, an external auditor would be beneficial in testing the effectiveness of the controls. In addition, Kudlerââ¬â¢s would need to document policies and procedures to establish an audit trail. According to Bagranoff, Simkin, and Strand, (2008, p. 50-251), these documents should include: 1. ââ¬Å"A chart of accounts (with the purpose of each general ledger account)â⬠2. ââ¬Å"A complete description of source documents individuals must use to record accounting transactionsâ⬠3. ââ¬Å"A comprehensive description of the authority and responsibility assigned to each individualâ⬠Controls Outside the AIS Kudler faces other external threats as well. T hese threats can be reduced by securing the AIS with firewalls, anti-virus, anti-spam, and other anti-spyware software. This will deter any potential hacker from accessing confidential information. Whereas, the software will not completely eliminate the risks involved with doing business over the Internet or remotely from each store, the risks will be greatly reduced. Conclusion Risk assessment and internal controls are vital to Kudlerââ¬â¢s continued success. Kudler will need to monitor the effectiveness of the internal controls once the new JIT inventory system is in place. In addition, management will need to assess the risks associated with expanding business. However, these risks are balanced out by the expected increase in business transactions to ensure Kudlerââ¬â¢s lasting success.
